CARTAGENA and the Caribbean coast

The walled city of Cartagena has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1984. Its fortifications, colonial houses and flower-covered balconies make it the classic end to a journey through Colombia, and the starting point for the islands and beaches of the Caribbean coast.

The walled city on foot

Cartagena is best discovered on foot, early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the heat eases. With a local guide you walk through the squares and streets of the historic centre, learn the history of the port and its fortresses, and end on the city walls at sunset.

Getsemaní

Just outside the walls, the neighbourhood of Getsemaní mixes colourful houses, street art and small squares where local life still happens. It is one of the best places in the city for an evening walk and Caribbean food.

The Rosario Islands

About an hour by boat from Cartagena, the Rosario Islands are part of a national park that protects coral reefs and clear water. A day on the islands is the easiest way to add the Caribbean Sea to your trip.

Beyond Cartagena

• Santa Marta and Tayrona National Park: beaches backed by jungle at the foot of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The park closes several times a year so nature can recover, so we check the dates before every trip.
• Mompox: a riverside colonial town on the Magdalena River, also a UNESCO World Heritage site, for travellers who want a quieter Caribbean.

When to go and how long to stay

The Caribbean coast is warm all year, usually between 28 and 32 °C. December to April is the driest period. Plan three nights in Cartagena, plus two or three more if you add the Rosario Islands, Santa Marta or Mompox. Cartagena is about an hour and a half by plane from Bogotá.
