Hikers among frailejones in a Boyacá páramo

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL

Responsible travel in
COLOMBIA

For us, responsible travel means that the places and people you visit are better off for your visit. We design community-based and eco-tourism experiences with local hosts, and we run them with our own team so we can answer for every detail.

Community-based tourism

You share time with artisans, farming families and local guides: a pottery workshop in Ráquira, a meal in a family home, a walk with someone who grew up in the páramo. These hosts set their own prices and are paid directly for their work.

Eco-tourism and nature

Colombia's páramos, cloud forests and high Andean lakes are fragile ecosystems that supply water to millions of people. We visit them with certified guides, in small groups, on authorised trails, and we follow each protected area's rules on capacity and conduct.

What we do in every trip

  • Small groups and private trips, never mass tourism
  • Local accommodation, transport and guides
  • Cultural respect: we visit communities that choose to receive travellers
  • No activities that harm wildlife or ecosystems
  • Clear information so you can travel with confidence

Towards regenerative travel

Our goal goes beyond reducing impact: we want each journey to support the regions that host it. That is why we work with communities over the long term, not only when a group arrives.

Examples from our trips in Boyacá

  • Learning the craft of wool with artisans near Villa de Leyva
  • Seeing how footballs are stitched by hand in Monguí
  • Tasting native Andean tubers such as cubios and ibias, grown by local families
  • An afternoon of tejo, Colombia's traditional game, with local players
  • Shopping at the farmers' market instead of souvenir stalls

Protecting the páramos

Páramos store and release water for millions of Colombians. On every páramo walk we stay on marked trails, keep groups small, carry out all waste and explain why these ecosystems matter, so that travellers leave as their advocates.

How you can travel responsibly in Colombia

  • Ask before taking photos of people, especially in rural and indigenous communities.
  • Buy crafts directly from the artisans who make them, in their workshops or at local markets.
  • Stay on marked trails in páramos and national parks, and never pick frailejones or other plants.
  • Carry a refillable bottle: many protected areas do not allow single-use plastics.
  • Tip guides and drivers when you are happy with their work; it is an important part of their income.
  • Learn a few words of Spanish: a greeting and a thank you open many doors.

Questions about responsible travel

What is community-based tourism?

It is a way of travelling in which local families, artisans and farmers host travellers on their own terms and receive the income from that visit. You share time with them instead of only passing through.

Is responsible travel more expensive?

Not necessarily. It means choosing local accommodation, guides and experiences, which often cost the same as standard options and keep more of your budget in the regions you visit.

Do you work with ACOTUR?

Yes. Colombie Travel is a member of ACOTUR, the Colombian Association for Responsible Tourism.
